A group of representatives recently visited the new Louisville Elementary school which houses grades K-5. They brought back lots of great information. The school has a lot of the same elements we are looking at in our new school with shared and flexible space, learning communities, and active collaboration among the teachers.
This is just some of the images that were brought back and those teachers who attended feel free to add any pertinent information to this page.

The movie link above shows the flexible space, and learning community in action
The following three images are snapshots of the learning communities, and you can see the flexible walls, and the instruction in action. It seemed that our staff found that this was successful and worked but did mention it took a lot of time training students on procedures so that it would operate successfully.

This was a wonderful experince to see that the direction we have chosen for our schools is working. All the classrooms we observed were student centered. The students were in groups or abililty groups. The whole school does the daily five as their reading program. The walls were open especially in the fourth and fifith grade units. It was quite for the most part and the students were all actively engaged. It did take a lot of planning between staff since they came from different buildings but it is working. Also the students needed directon because of the change. Their scores are very good. They had a lot of great ideas. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. It was very exciting to see the school day in action.
