Device Fragmentation Research

Page history last edited by Jayson Yeagley 11 years, 8 months ago

I wanted to do some reading on fragmentation of devices.  I am doing this with an open mind on what I will find.  As of now, I think that a tablet has many advantages over traditional laptops and other CPUs.  Some refer to tablets as 'Post PCs'.  The tablet is one that all subjects can use.  There seems to be no limitations.  I am also most interested in the Apple iPad.  As of now, I feel it is superior in its longevity, massive availability of apps, and the ability to control it.  As of now, I am under the mindset that we have a huge chunk of your teachers using this device.  Fragmenting with the teachers will create a riff in several ways.  Again, I decided to document this research and I welcome others to join in.  I want to backup my opinion with research so that it is more than just "drinking the Apple Kool-Aid".

Article number one: What are the pros and cons of choosing different devices for classroom use – e.g. laptops vs. tablets vs. desktops vs thin-client?

http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/what-are-the-pros-and-cons-of-choosing-different-devices-for-classroom-use-e-g-laptops-vs-tablets-vs-desktops-vs-thin-client/

Skinny:  This was a bust.  Not much info in this article

My reaction:  I am going to have to do a little better.

article number two: The school that swapped its laptops for iPads… and wants to switch back

Read more: The school that swapped its laptops for iPads… and wants to switch back | PC Pro blog http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2012/09/11/the-school-that-swapped-its-laptops-for-ipads-and-wants-to-switch-back/#ixzz2dn9wK5cS

Skinny:  A school in the UK switched out laptops for iPads.  The problem was teachers wanted to use the iPad like it was a laptop and it is not.  They wanted to cling to the old ways such as Word and PowerPoint.  The iPad did not handle the activities correctly.  Some wanted the laptop back after having the iPad for a while.

My reaction: This article is not exactly what I was looking for, but it reminded me about the fact the iPad is a Post PC device and it is not an apple to apples comparison.  I will continue to look for articles with multiple devices working in a school.

article number three: BYOD in Schools: Pros and Cons. http://news.enterprisemobilitytoday.com/articles/share/56380/

Skinny: The pros and cons of BYOD.  Most of the responses were obvious including saving money and making devices available.

My reaction: This article points out how hard it is to manage different devices.  I learned a new term called digital inequity.  Trying to manage all the devices would be hard if not impossible.  Also, some students do not have the device to begin with.  I want to move towards more research.

article number four: iPad in school: iPad vs Laptop for 1 to 1
